Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure in which a tooth-colored resin material is applied to the surface of a tooth and then hardened with a special light. The procedure is often used to improve the appearance of teeth that are discolored, chipped, cracked, or misshapen.

The dental bonding process typically involves the following steps:

Preparation: The dentist will first prepare the tooth by roughening its surface and applying a conditioning liquid that helps the bonding material adhere.

Bonding: The dentist will then apply the tooth-colored resin material to the tooth and shape it to the desired size and shape. The material is then hardened using a special light.

Finishing: Once the bonding material is hardened, the dentist will trim and polish it to match the shape and shine of the surrounding teeth.

Dental bonding is a relatively quick and non-invasive procedure that can be completed in one office visit. It is also less expensive than other cosmetic dental procedures such as veneers or crowns. However, the bonding material is not as strong or durable as other materials and may need to be replaced after several years.

How long should dental bonding last?

The lifespan of dental bonding depends on several factors, including the location of the bonding, the amount of wear and tear the bonding receives, and the oral hygiene habits of the patient.

On average, dental bonding can last anywhere from 3 to 10 years. However, with proper care and maintenance, bonding can last even longer. It is important to avoid biting down on hard objects, such as ice or pens, as this can cause the bonding to chip or crack. It is also important to maintain good oral hygiene habits, including regular brushing and flossing, to prevent decay or damage to the bonding.

Regular dental checkups are also important to ensure the bonding is still intact and functioning properly. Your dentist will be able to determine if any repairs or replacements are necessary.
